Bought
& Sold is a compelling coming-of-age story set in
the ethnic neighborhoods of Jersey City, NJ. The film examines
the funny and touching relationship between a young Puerto
Rican man and an immigrant pawnbroker.
RAYMOND "RAY RAY" MORALES (Rafael Sardina), an ambitious
19-year-old, is struggling to get ahead. Ray Ray's dream is
simply to by a DJ's turntable rig and spin for the Friday
night crowds. But his job at a local shoe store is leading
nowhere, and his high maintenance girlfriend is pressuring
him for marriage. Pushed by these constant demands, Ray Ray
agrees to join his friend PAPO (Frank Harts), working part-time
for an influential neighborhood loan-shark, ALPHONSO "CHUNKS"
COLON (Joe Grifasi).
Ray
Ray quickly impresses his new boss and soon gets promoted
to overseeing the operations of a local pawnshop owned by
an aging Armenian immigrant, "UNCLE KUTTY" NAZARIAN
(David Margulies). Kutty owes Chunks a considerable debt,
and it is Ray Ray's job to ensure that Kutty makes good on
his weekly payments.
With
the help of Kutty's beautiful and caring niece, RUBY (Marjan
Neshat), Ray Ray and Kutty overcome their initial differences
and develop a strong and binding friendship. But when Chunks
grows impatient with Kutty and eventually demands a large
payoff, Ray Ray finds himself caught in the middle. Caught
between two men. Between right and wrong. Between courage
and fear.
